SRE and Chaplaincy
What are the differences between an SRE (Scripture) teacher and a Chaplain and how they can work together?
See www.dest.gov.au/schools/chaplains
The Board of AYF are excited that Young Life have been able to access the Federal Government’s funding for Chaplaincy with the placement of Brendan Hatte for 16 hours per week at Armidale High School.
The idea behind chaplaincy is to supply a person with a listening ear who is able to mentor, befriend and build relationship and trust with the school community for students of all faiths. A chaplain is not involved in any systematic teaching and does not have an instructional role but rather as they encounter needs of both a spiritual and a practical nature they can refer the students to teachers, school counsellors, the Principal, ministers, SRE teacher and so on.
Brendan will be interacting with the students before and after school, during lunch times, sporting events and school camps. He will be responsible to the school Principal and to the Area Director of Young Life Armidale. As the position is fully funded by the Federal Government there is no requirement for any financial support from the Armidale community.
As an SRE teacher David will be conducting regular SRE (Scripture) classes and promotion Christian activities as a part of the school timetable both at Armidale and Duval High Schools. He will systematically share the Gospel and teach the fundamental tenants of the Christian faith at both schools as set out in the curriculum to be developed by the Armidale Ministers Fellowship. The right of access of the Churches to the schools for this purpose is set out in NSW legislation. David will be responsible to the Christian community of Armidale through the Armidale Ministers Fellowship administered by Armidale Youth Futures. All funding for the SRE (Scripture) position needs to come from the Churches and Christian community of Armidale.
Armidale Youth Futures, Young Life, David and Brendan are looking forward to the opportunity of working together in complementary roles and the possibilities that will arise for the youth of Armidale!
